Red Clay Dance Company returns to the Dance Center as part of its 18th season. Founded by Vershawn Sanders-Ward (BFA ’02), Red Clay Dance Company has become a leading force in contemporary dance rooted in African Diasporic traditions. The company’s ensemble of dynamic and versatile dance Artivists tours and performs across local, national, and international stages, bringing their signature blend of artistry and activism to diverse audiences around the world.

“We were last at the Dance Center for 16 – where I was able to revisit and reimagine Written on the Flesh before it went on to the Harris, The Yard and Jacob’s Pillow. This spring, we are presenting works that showcase the artistry of the largest company of dancers Red Clay Dance Company has had to date. Vershawn-Sanders Ward is an award-winning director, choreographer, educator and artivist. Her numerous awards include the inaugural Walder Foundation Platform Award, 2025 Chicagoan of the Year in Dance, 2025 Chicago Defender Woman of Excellence, Dance/USA Artist Fellowship, Dance /USA Leadership Fellowship, Chicago Dancemakers Forum Award, and 3Arts awardee.
