Textile Dances Workshop
by Rachel Damon
This workshop draws from Textile Dances, a series of kinetic fabric works devised by Rachel Damon over the last 10 years. Abstract motions drive and follow the textiles, stemming from modern dance, martial arts, and needlecraft choreographies. Expand your kinesphere as you loft and drag weighted textiles made through a process called arm knitting. Wrap yourself in a cocoon of comfort, then swirl and stretch as we twist space together.
Body intelligence from all backgrounds is welcome – dancers, actors, yogis, acrobats, martial artists, and more. Or sit and watch in the comfortable theater seats. Bring your needlecraft to stitch as you draw inspiration from the movers! All bodies, minds, and identities are invited to take part. Language, lighting, and sound accessibility requests can be made by contacting the Dance Center.
Wear clothes you are comfortable moving in. Bare feet and minimal hair pins or jagged accessories are recommended to minimize textile snags. Face masks, head coverings, binders, earplugs, and other comfort tools are welcome. All movements can be modified to the dancer’s preferences.
Textiles provided - please register in advance so we know how many to bring!
