Video premieres by alum Jovan Landry - enjoy!

In this time of anxiety and uncertainty, we are sharing these gifts of joy from Chicago artist and Columbia alum Jovan Landry. Please enjoy and much gratitude to Jovan! We’ll see you at the polls next week if you haven’t already voted!

For Jovan Landry (Cinema Arts + Science, '14), World Vibe is dedicated to the dance community, Chicago, and travels to Nigeria, Haiti, and Cuba. It is a fuse of black dance music genres worldwide through Dancehall, House, Afro-Caribbean, and Afrobeat instrumentals. Considering the times we're living in, Jovan elevates with vibes that are warm, celebratory, and free.

"I was introduced to film for dance at Columbia College Chicago in 2013 while being a work-study student under Jane Jerardi (Dance Center's Media and Technology Coordinator). Since then, I've become a sought out filmmaker in the dance community: Collaborated with Onye Ozuzu/Ozuzudances, Bravesoul Movement, Red Clay Dance Company, Links Hall, J'Sun Howard, Ayodele Drum & Dance Company, and QDance Center; all Dance Center affiliated. So it only makes sense to make music for my dance family!" —Jovan Landry

UBIQUE

"Ubique means "Everywhere" in Latin. The Soca sound of the Caribbean heartbeat penetrates through your soul, giving your ears a rhythmic massage. Like the waves of the sea, reaching the ears of the people who live close to waters that flow like the melodies of this track. Clap your hands and stomp your feet to this, and you'll find yourself sonically in paradise." -ABJZ.

Featuring a djembe drum cover by T. Ayo Alston (Faculty). Videography and Editing by Jovan Landry.

WAREHOUSE

"The inspiration for Warehouse derived from the very same nightclub that birthed Chicago House Music. This genre of music was first popularized in the late '70s by DJ Frankie Knuckles, aka The Godfather of Chicago House. Allow the high pass filters and the draggy flangers to lead your body into a hypnotic sweat." -ABJZ.

Choreographed and performed by Keyierra Collins ('16) and Ambe'r Johnson ('16). Collins and Johnson coin this movement an "Afro-Contemporary Medley" with influence from Sabar, Afro Street, Chicago House, Afro-Footwork, Modern and Groovin'. Costume by Ambe' r Johnson. Music, Cinematography & Editing by Jovan Landry, Assistant Camera by Etiti Ayeni and Aaliyah Christina ('16).

SOULSTICE SIESTA

"After traveling to Cuba and witnessing the phenomenal Eddie Palmieri play at the Chicago Jazz Fest, Soulstice Siesta was conceived. Summertime in the Spanish/Latinx culture is described as solstice or siesta. The conversion of solstice to Soulstice emphasizes how much passion and soul go into Cuban music. The aggressive horns and freestyle bell solo grabs your attention, inviting your hips to experience an Afro-Cuban hip-hop vibe." -ABJZ.

Concept by Keisha Janae ('16) and Jovan Landry, Movement and Poem by Keisha Janae, Cameo and Cinematography by Jovan Landry, Camera Assistance by Frenchie, Editing by Brizzy Danks
